As the HSCA stated:
In November 1963, there were 552 employees of the Secret Service—-313 agents and 131 clerks from 66 field offices; 30 employees in the office of the Chief; 36 members of the WHD; 6 special agent-drivers; 8 special agents assigned to the Kennedy family; 5 special officers assigned to the Kennedy home in Hyannis port, MA. [This is a total of 529. However, if you add the Chief & the Deputy Chiefs (assuming they are not a part of the 30 employee tally), PRS agents, as well as the Inspectors, you may come close to this number]
There were 70 special agents and 8 clerks—14% of agency resources—assigned to protect the President and the Vice President or to PRS. According to the HSCA, 28 special agents were on the Texas trip [HSCA Report, page 228; 3 HSCA 322]. This number is in error. However, 28 agents DID accompany JFK to Fort Worth [18 H 670]. Perhaps this is the origin of this error.

some detailed obits:
Kenneth Iacovoni
– special agent
Jill Tucker, SF Chronicle Staff Writer

Sunday, October 29, 2006

Kenneth D. Iacovoni stood at President Gerald Ford’s side just outside
the St. Francis Hotel on Sept. 22, 1975, when a gun went off from 40
feet away. Mr. Iacovoni, among the president’s Secret Service detail
that day, bolted across the street to help tackle the gunman, who
agents later realized was a woman.

Sara Jane Moore’s pistol shot had missed.

Years later, Mr. Iacovoni brought his wife, Darla Iacovoni, to the Post
Street side of the San Francisco hotel and showed her the bullet hole.
He described where the limousine was, where people stood, what
happened. It was one memory of many that Mr. Iacovoni collected during
his 20 years as a Secret Service agent.

Mr. Iacovoni, who protected six U.S. presidents during his career, died
Oct. 19 of congestive heart failure and other ailments. He was 75.

Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Jan. 22, 1931, Mr. Iacovoni had an
interest in protective service since he was an undergraduate at
Michigan State University in the early 1950s. He enlisted in the
Marines during the Korean War, interrupting his studies. He spent his
service on active duty in the Mediterranean region. Honorably
discharged in 1954, he returned to the university, earning a degree in
police administration.

He was appointed as a special agent in the Secret Service’s Cincinnati
field office by 1959 and to the president’s security detail in 1965. By
the time he left the service in 1979, he had protected Presidents
Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ford
and Jimmy Carter.

He wasn’t with Kennedy the day the president died in 1963 but was
subsequently appointed to protect first lady Jacqueline Kennedy after
the assassination, said Mr. Iacovoni’s wife.

In 1969, he became the special agent in charge of the so-called Western
White House, Nixon’s home in San Clemente (Orange County), and in 1974,
he played the same role in the San Francisco field office.

“Ken’s career spanned six presidential administrations, and as the
special agent in charge of the San Francisco field office, he led this
district with distinction during the tumultuous 1970s and the attempt
by Sara Jane Moore on President Ford’s life in September 1975,” Jean
Mitchell, the current special agent in charge of the San Francisco
office, said in a statement.

Moore was convicted and is serving a life sentence at the Federal
Correctional Institution in Dublin.

Protecting presidents was never boring to Mr. Iacovoni, his wife said.
“I would say those were his most exciting times,” she said.

Yet, he wouldn’t always talk about the details of those days.

“He would neither comment nor gossip about the presidents,” his wife
said. “He was very loyal to the Secret Service and his position.”

Fellow agent Jerry Parr remembers meeting Mr. Iacovoni in Hawaii, as
Johnson headed to Vietnam during the war.

“For an agent, I always thought he had a lot of soul,” Parr said from
his home in Washington, D.C. “In other words, he cared about people.”

Upon his retirement, Mr. Iacovoni continued the line of work, serving
as head of security for the Pebble Beach Co. in the early 1980s. Later,
he performed various roles with O’Gara Protective Services, including
working with the Saudi Royal Guard Brigade in the early 1990s, living
and working in Saudi Arabia for five years.

Other jobs included overseeing security for the Revs. Billy and
Franklin Graham.

While security was his job, Mr. Iacovoni’s personal passion was
history.

“He read and read,” said his wife, adding that he loved all history,
but especially biographies of the early presidents.

Mr. Iacovoni’s place in history was set when Moore fired the gun in
1975.

“Our whole life was spent figuring out how to prevent that from
happening,” said Parr, who was protecting Reagan when he was shot on
March 30, 1981. Parr threw Reagan into the limousine, only later
realizing that the president was hit.

The two agents also liked to compare stories.

“We talked long and deep about (Mr. Iacovoni’s) particular day, and we
talked about mine,” Parr said. “It happened on your watch, and nobody
wants that to happen on your watch.”

Mr. Iacovoni is survived by his wife of 22 years, Darla Iacovoni of San
Jose; daughter, Lisa Uvehara of Sacramento; son, Kevin Iacovoni of
Brentwood; stepson, Ron Jenkins of Hollister; stepdaughters, Robyn Blum
of Los Gatos and Danielle Jenkins of San Jose; four grandchildren, with
a fifth due Wednesday; brother, Gordon Iacovoni of Michigan; and
several nieces and nephews.

Henry Kulbaski, 74; Ordered Copter Over White House Downed

By Yvonne Shinhoster Lamb, Washington Post Staff Writer

Henry S. Kulbaski, 74, a uniformed Secret Service agent who played the
accordion on the South Lawn for President John F. Kennedy and ordered
an errant aircraft shot down over the White House in 1974, died of
cancer June 17 [2007] at Geisinger Hospital in Wilkes-Barre,
Pennsylvania.

Mr. Kulbaski was watch commander in the White House Executive Office
control center in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 17, 1974, when he
received word from the Maryland State Police that an army helicopter
had been stolen from Fort Meade and was being chased into restricted
air space near the White House.

As the purloined UH1B Huey helicopter circled the Washington Monument,
Mr. Kulbaski watched and waited. President Richard M. Nixon and his
family were away, and at 1 a.m. Mr. Kulbaski was having difficulty
reaching his superiors.

“When no one answered, I knew I had to make the decision myself,” he
told the Citizen’s Voice in Wilkes-Barre in 1994.

The copter buzzed the White House and resumed circling the monument.
If it came back, Mr. Kulbaski told the protective service agents on
duty, be prepared to shoot it down.

About 20 minutes later, the copter headed again toward the White
House, and Mr. Kulbaski gave the order. The copter “landed in a blaze
of gunfire on the south lawn of the White House,” according to a 1974
article in The Washington Post.

The pilot, who had taken the state police on an erratic 50-mile
journey through Maryland and into Washington [dc], suffered
superficial pellet wounds and was taken into custody.

Nixon later congratulated Mr. Kulbaski for issuing the order to down
the helicopter.

Mr. Kulbaski, an accomplished accordion player who specialized in
polkas, was asked by first lady Jacqueline Kennedy to play at White
House parties for the president, which he did.

However, when President Lyndon B. Johnson asked him to play his
accordion at a reception in honor of his daughter Lynda Bird’s wedding
to Charles S. Robb, he declined. Mr. Kulbaski was concerned that he
did not have sufficient time to master the song “The Yellow Rose of
Texas,” said his nephew, Frank Kulbaski.

During his 20-year career, Mr. Kulbaski spent much of his time at the
White House managing tours and was frequently called on by members of
Congress to provide tours for family members and important
constituents. He also gave VIP tours to many Hollywood luminaries.

In a 1967 Parade magazine piece, Jack Anderson wrote about Mr.
Kulbaski encountering a 4-year-old on one of his tours who was the
first to respond to the question of who was the nation’s 13th
president. (It was Millard Fillmore.) Mr. Kulbaski, who questioned the
boy further, was amazed at his knowledge of all 36 presidents and
arranged for him to meet President Johnson, his nephew said.

Mr. Kulbaski was born in Ashley, Pennsylvania, and after graduating
from high school at 17, he sought to join the Navy, but his parents
refused to sign the required consent form for minors. Eager to enlist,
he persuaded the owner of the embroidery factory where he worked to
sign the form. He was accepted for service and stationed in Hawaii,
where he primarily repaired helicopter rotors.

After four years in the Navy, Mr. Kulbaski moved to Buffalo, where
worked for the Bell Aircraft Corp., helping to assemble the Bell X-1,
the first aircraft to break the sound barrier.

He later moved to Washington and briefly worked in the D.C.
[Washington DC] police department. In 1958, he joined the Secret
Service’s Uniformed Division. His service spanned six presidents, from
Dwight D. Eisenhower to Jimmy Carter, before he retired as a
lieutenant in 1978 and returned to Ashley.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Shirley Carey of Ashley; a
sister; and a brother.

Former U.S. Secret Service agent Robert G. Reese, who protected two
U.S. presidents and became a respected mediator for Stark County
Family Court, died Monday at 58 at his Jackson Township home, due to
cancer.
“He really fought hard and had a very optimistic outlook through it
all,” said his wife of 32 years, Joyce Reese. “His family, his friends
were very important to him.”

She said her husband was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus eight
months ago, but doctors then gave him a good prognosis. The tumor was
removed, but the cancer had spread.

Stark County Family Court Judge David Stucki said Reese, who became a
full-time attorney after he retired from the Secret Service, was one
of the best mediators and Guardians Ad Litem his court had ever had. A
Guardian Ad Litem investigates child custody disputes to help
determine what’s in the best interests of the children.

“There’s going to be a huge hole in the hearts of his family and all
the people at the court who loved him,” said Stucki, who visited Reese
about a week ago. “I don’t know if I would be as stoic and as calm and
resolute as Bob was.”

Former Canton city councilwoman Rosemary Diamond worked for him as a
paralegal and later oversaw his work, when she became a family liaison
specialist for Stark Family Court.

“There’s no one I’ve ever met who’s had the capabilities, the
intelligence and most importantly, the objectivity that he had,” she
said.

Former Canton FBI resident agent-in-charge William Downey remembered
working with Reese, when he was the agent-in-charge of the Secret
Service’s Canton office during the 1980s.

“His love for the community resulted in his family remaining here,”
Downey said. “He was a dedicated public servant committed to
cooperation between law enforcement agencies.”

Reese was born in Johnstown, Pa. After graduating from Indiana
University in Indiana, Pa. in 1970, Reese joined the Secret Service
and joined the presidential security detail in 1978, later protecting
Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. He later told The
Repository he was riding in a car with other agents to start a shift
protecting Reagan in March 1981, when he heard that Reagan had been
shot. He guarded Reagan as he lay on his hospital bed.

Reese retired from the Secret Service in 1991, got a law degree from
the University of Akron and established a legal practice, before
becoming a Guardian Ad Litem and mediator for the Family Court.

Friends may call 5-9 p.m. Friday at Lamiell. Service will be 11 a.m.
Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Thomas Dexter Strong, a retired Secret Service agent, and who lived in
Arnold, Maryland, died of complications of diabetes December 4, 2005,
at Anne Arundel [Maryland] Medical Center, at the age of 73.

Mr. Strong worked for the Secret Service from 1959 until 1985, serving
as an inspector in the Washington headquarters and as a field agent in
New England and the Midwest.

He was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and raised in Plymouth, Michigan, and
Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He graduated from Michigan State University’s police administration
school and then worked a year as a probationary officer in Saginaw,
Michigan, before joining the Secret Service.

He took some time off in 1967 to establish the public safety department
at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

After his Secret Service retirement, he worked for 10 years in the
inspector general’s office at the Department of Education. He later
conducted background investigations for an organization that does
security clearance work.

Mr. Strong was past president of the Association of Former Agents of
the U.S. Secret Service. He played racquetball in the Senior Olympics.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Nancy Jean Pickard Strong of
Arnold, Maryland; three children, Lauren S. Cowan of Crofton, Thomas M.
Strong of Ashburn, Maryland, and Mark J. Strong of Baltimore, Maryland;
a brother; and seven grandchildren.

John Paul Jones
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Former Secret Service agent John Jones, who
protected four presidents and drove Jackie Kennedy to the hospital for the
birth of her son John, died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer. He was 75.
He probably had a book full of anecdotes about his association with presidents,
but mostly kept those to himself, said his wife of 51 years, Betty Jones.
However, occasionally he would talk about something harmless, such as driving
then-president-elect Kennedy’s wife to the hospital.
His wife said his first assignment was Eisenhower’s grandchildren.
Jones spent 25 years with the Secret Service, working with presidents
Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. He also was head of the Albuquerque
Secret Service office twice before his retirement in 1979.
___
Arthur Lincoln Godfrey, 81, a Secret Service agent who was assigned to
presidential protection in the 1950s and 1960s and who retired in 1974
as assistant special agent in charge of the protective operations
service, died of kidney failure May 12, 2002, at Southern Maryland
Hospital Center in Clinton, Maryland.

Mr. Godfrey, a Temple Hills, Maryland, resident, served under
Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, largely
doing trip planning. After he retired, he was assistant press
secretary in the late 1970s for former vice president Nelson A.
Rockefeller. He also did press work for the Labor Department until the
early 1990s.

Mr. Godfrey was a native of Farmington, Michigan, and a police
administration graduate of Michigan State University.

He served in the Army in Europe during World War II, and his
decorations included a Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He
received the Silver Star for rescuing a soldier and carrying him back
to friendly lines in Italy while under enemy fire.

His avocations included photography, and after retiring, he took
freelance pictures on auto-racing assignments for the Associated
Press. He also was the official photographer of the Association of
Former Agents of the U.S. Secret Service.

He was a recipient of the Treasury Department’s Albert Gallatin Award.

Robert J. Motto, 88, a former Secret Service agent who protected five
presidents in his 21-year career, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, in his
Downers Grove, Illinois, home after a heart attack. Born in Brooklyn,
N.Y., Mr. Motto attended City College of New York and served in the
U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 in counterintelligence. After the war, he
was an investigator with the U.S. Postal Service in New York. Mr.
Motto joined the Secret Service in 1949 and over the years worked in
field offices in St. Louis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Springfield and
Washington, D.C. He retired in 1970 as the assistant to the special
agent in charge of the Chicago field office. Mr. Motto and his late
brother Carmine, also a Secret Service agent, were renowned for their
undercover work, colleagues and family members said. “Both my dad and
my uncle were very, very low-key people,” said Mr. Motto’s niece,
Irene Kaufman. “I think that’s what helped them both be very
successful undercover agents.” During his Secret Service career, Mr.
Motto solved several counterfeiting cases, and he had numerous
adventures guarding presidents, recalled his longtime neighbor, Terry
Mejdrech. Mr. Motto used to tell the story about how he once had to
tackle President Harry Truman when there was some gunfire outside of
where Truman was staying and Mr. Motto thought the president was too
near the window, Mejdrech said. In the excitement, Mr. Motto yelled
and actually swore at Truman, she said. “The next day, he thought he
was going to be fired for sure,” Mejdrech said. “But Truman thanked
him profusely.” After his career with the Secret Service, Mr. Motto
held several state and local police jobs and worked as a private
investigator, retiring fully only about five years ago.

It wasn’t easy for Larry Hess to become a Secret Service agent and,
once in, he quickly became a good one.

“When Larry and I joined, there were only 300 agents,” said Frank
Slocum of Waianae, Hawaii. “In order to get into the Secret Service,
somebody had to die or resign or be fired to create an opening.”

That was 1955, and the service was under the Treasury Department. “We
always had to set an example of thrift,” said the retired agent. “We
had to drive old cars without radios or air-conditioning.”

Working counterfeit cases, Mr. Hess helped agents get nicer cars to
drive.

“We always met with the suspect in his own car,” Mr. Slocum said,
because those had more luxuries than Secret Service cars. “That way,
after we got the counterfeit money, we could seize the car. That’s how
we got our cars.”

Mr. Hess, who was an expert marksman, was assigned to field offices
from Los Angeles to Atlanta. He helped protect presidents from Dwight
D. Eisenhower onward through his retirement in 1981, said his son, Tom
Hess of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The funeral for Lawrence Thomas Hess, 79, of Snellville is 11 a.m.
Thursday at Henry Funeral Home. The graveside service is 2:30 p.m.
Thursday at Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Milledgeville. He died of
cancer Sunday at Embracing Hospice.

When a president was traveling near the field office where he was
assigned, Mr. Hess was called upon to provide additional Secret Service
protection, Mr. Slocum said. For three years he protected President
Eisenhower’s grandson, David Eisenhower, with whom he maintained a
relationship, his son said.

When President Eisenhower was playing golf at Augusta National or in
Palm Springs, Calif., Mr. Hess was on the course with him, but not on
the fairway. “We had to walk in the rough toting radios and machine
guns,” Mr. Slocum said. “That’s why I don’t like golf.”

Mr. Hess was attached to President Richard Nixon’s historic trip to
China and to the investigation of President John F. Kennedy’s
assassination in 1963, his son said.

Because he was a bachelor in the Secret Service, he got moved around
frequently and called upon for a variety of assignments, Mr. Slocum
said.

“I would consider Larry a good agent because he was very
conscientious,” he said. “He was a go-getter, plus, he was a very smart
guy.”

Once he left the Secret Service, Mr. Hess continued to protect
presidents in his fashion. Through letters to the editor of The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution, he castigated the press, opponents of the
president and the nation’s allies.

“He was a Ronald Reagan Republican,” his son said.

At home, he entertained himself playing the piano and collecting beer
steins. In the community, the World War II Navy veteran had been an
officer of VFW 4180 and of the American Legion in Snellville, his son
said.

Survivors include his wife, Suesan Hess; another son, Larry Hess of
Snellville; and two grandchildren.

LEE RAYMOND SCHAR, 59;
26-year Secret Service agent

BYLINE: By Joan Giangrasse Kates, Special to the Tribune.

Although his job for more than two decades was to protect
presidents and other high-ranking officials–challenging
work that often took him halfway around the globe–Lee
Raymond Schar’s thoughts were never far from his family.

Mr. Schar, 59, of Whitefish, Mont., formerly of Naperville,
died after a 10-month battle with cancer Tuesday, June 15,
in his home.

As a 26-year U.S. Secret Service agent during the 1970s,
’80s and ’90s, Mr. Schar had a front-row seat to many
historic events. But on March 30, 1981, the day President
Ronald Reagan was shot by would-be assassin John Hinckley
just blocks from the White House, the Chicago native was
working outside the nation’s capital, as part of a security
detail for Vice President George H.W. Bush.

After learning about the attempt on the president’s life,
Mr. Schar was told that fellow agent and friend Timothy
McCarthy, a Chicago-area native who is now chief of police
in Orland Park, also had been shot and wounded in the
ordeal.

“Because we were never sure what Lee was doing or where he
was, his first reaction that day was to call our house and
let us know he was OK,” recalled his wife of 35 years,
Joyce. “But there weren’t cell phones back then and he
couldn’t get ahold of me. We were living in a suburb of
Virginia, not too far from where the McCarthys lived. So
when I heard the news, I jumped into our car and drove to
Tim’s house to be with his wife.”

It wasn’t until hours later, and after seeing television
coverage of his wife’s mini-van parked in the driveway of
the McCarthy home, that Mr. Schar realized where his wife
had been.

“I’ll never forget that day as long as I live,” his wife
said. “It was chaotic and frightening for everyone.”

Born in Chicago, Mr. Schar grew up in Berkeley and was a
1963 graduate of Proviso West High School in Hillside, where
he met his wife. In 1968, he graduated from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a major in psychology
and a minor in human factor engineering. He and his wife
married in 1969, and for a few years later he worked as a
grade school English teacher.

Mr. Schar began his Secret Service career in 1974, working
in the Chicago field office, where he assisted in criminal
investigations and was briefly assigned to protect President
Gerald Ford. Two years later, he served as part of a
security detail for Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale, who
were then still candidates for president and vice president.

“His lifelong dream had always been to go into law
enforcement as a way of helping people,” his wife said. “He
got to know an agent with the Secret Service who told him
all about it and encouraged him to take the tests.”

In 1980, Mr. Schar moved with his family to the Washington
area, and after Reagan took office, he was assigned to
protect Bush. Eight years later, he returned to Chicago to
work in the intelligence and fraud division, and settled
with his family in Naperville.

In 2000, Mr. Schar left the Secret Service and moved to
Montana, where he built a mountain home in Whitefish. After
Sept. 11, 2001, however, he accepted a position supervising
federal air marshals in Seattle for the Transportation
Security Administration, working there until his retirement
in January.

“`Passion’ is an overused word these days, but it’s really
what Lee felt when it came to his work,” said Paul Radzicki
of Naperville, a longtime friend and retired Secret Service
agent.

Other survivors include three daughters, Kristin, Jenny
Hutt, and Katherine; his parents, Wallace and Fern; and two
brothers, James and Keith.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday in Grove
Memorial Chapel, 1199 S. Arlington Heights Rd., Elk Grove
Village. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the
chapel.

Charles F. “Keith” Lummis, 97, an ex-Secret Service agent and a
biographer of his father, who founded Los Angeles’ Southwest Museum,
died Monday, April 22, 2002, in San Francisco, Californai, no cause
given. Lummis’ book, “Charles F. Lummis: The Man and His West,” was
published in 1975 by Oklahoma University Press. It described the
colorful life of the senior Lummis, a newspaperman who walked from
Chillicothe, Ohio, to Los Angeles, California, writing about his
adventures and collecting Indian artifacts along the way.

The senior Lummis worked as an editor at the Los Angeles Times and a
librarian for the Los Angeles Public Library, and founded the
Southwest Museum in 1912. Keith Lummis worked for the Border Patrol as
well as the Secret Service, where he guarded President Franklin D.
Roosevelt.

He helped preserve the Lummis legacy through the biography of his
father and his contacts with the respected museum. In 1975, he gave
the museum a 400-page guest book containing the signatures of his
father’s famous visitors.

O’BRIEN: It’s been a year since the nation paid its final respects to former President Ronald Reagan. Over the weekend, some special friends made an emotional visit to the Reagan grave site.

More now from CNN’s Peter Viles.

(BEGIN VIDEO TAPE)

PETER VILES, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): : A year after Nancy Reagan said that final good-bye to her husband, a big group of old friends came to visit her — nearly 200 retired Secret Service agents, many of the men who once protected Mrs. Reagan and her husband.

GARRICK NEWMAN, U.S. SECRET SERVICE (RET.): This is just a show of respect and wanting to pay their regards to him and visit his gravesite.

VILES: Among that number, a retired agent named John Barletta.

BARLETTA: It’s just that he was so loved. These agents from all over the world, paying their own money, they wanted to do a tribute to Ronald Reagan.

VILES: Few agents knew the Reagans better. He rode horseback with the president. The day her husband was shot, he tried and failed to keep Mrs. Reagan away from the hospital.

BARLETTA: We said, “Mrs. Reagan, we’d rather you stay here. We don’t know what’s going on. And for you — we’d rather have control here.”

And she just looked and said, “Either you take me or I’m walking.”

I went, “Yes!”

VILES: Now retired, John trains guide dogs. He likes to bring them to a favorite spot on a hillside to tell them about his old friend. BARLETTA: He was a good man, Astro.

VILES: He shares memories with the book “Riding with Reagan,” memories that still touch his heart.

(on camera): Do you miss him?

BARLETTA: I miss him a lot.

VILES: It’s been a year, yes.

BARLETTA: It’s OK. He knows I’m having trouble.

VILES: I didn’t mean to shake you up like that.

BARLETTA: We were very close. I’m honored to be so. It’s just amazing. We had hundreds of hours of one on one conversation. And usually as an agent, you know, you’re not there to be his friend. But you couldn’t be around him very long without becoming his friend.

VILES (voice-over): An old friend gone, but not forgotten.

BARLETTA: We’ll be back.

VILES: Peter Viles, for CNN, Simi Valley, California.
