These logbook entries illustrate some of the historic flights made by Boeing VC-137C SAM 26000 (Air Force One) from 1963-1965.
The logbook shows the entries made on Nov. 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy flew to Dallas, Texas, where he was assassinated. It logs President Kennedy's final flight from Dallas (Love Field) to Andrews Air Force Base. On this flight Kennedy's body was returned to Washington, D.C.
The logbook also shows entries made under the new President Lyndon B. Johnson. It was on this aircraft that Vice President Johnson was sworn in as the new President of the United States.

The very best factual novel ever written on the JFK assassination!
The very best factual novel ever written on the JFK assassination!
Simply put, author John Onesti has brilliantly put together a well written factual novel that both entertains and informs. The names have been slightly changed to protect the innocent AND the guilty- it is no "secret" that this is a valuable "service" to the reader, if you catch my drift. Those familiar with the names, dates, and facts of the case will find much to ruminate over, while the novice will enjoy the story-telling quality of the "factional" novel.
Onesti has hit a home run with this book. My eyes usually glaze over when I see so-called novels on the JFK assassination- they are usually boring and terrible, to be honest. I am heartened to say that Onesti's book is the crème of the entire crop- he is the REAL "king" of this genre of assassination literature. GET THIS ONE ASAP!

After
the assassination, I was re-assigned to guard the presidential vehicle after it
had been flown back to the White House garage. Several hospital staff members
from Bethesda Naval Hospital entered the vehicle to remove scalp, brain tissue
and bone matter from the back seat. While waiting for the Bethesda Naval
Hospital attendants to arrive, I did notice what appeared to be a bullet-hole
in the front windshield of the driver’s side. I do not remember if the glass
remnants were on the inside of the vehicle or the outside of the windshield. If
the glass remnants were on the inside of the car, it would offer some
acceptance to the theory that at least one of the shots came from the front of
the President’s vehicle.
I don’t
remember anything out of the ordinary regarding my duties prior to the
assassination other than several trips to the Kennedy residence in Palm Beach,
Florida. I also recall an incident in Chicago involving a suspect who was
planning to assassinate the President. However, I was not involved in that
investigation and the threat was taken care of by the Chicago office of the
Secret Service.
I believe Oswald was the
shooter and though I am not a conspiracy buff, I believe if others were
involved, I think the Mafia would be the only ones who could have pulled it off
without someone later confessing involvement in the President’s assassination.
In those days, Mafia members had a strict code that did not allow them to
confess. It had been said that a New Orleans Mafia Don, Carlos Marcello, was
heard to say, “If you cut off the head of the snake (JFK), the tail (RFK),
would die.” At that time, Robert Kennedy was the Attorney General and was
working against the Mafia. Shortly after the assassination, Robert Kennedy was
fired and it took another 20-years before the F.B.I. made any headway against
the Mafia.
For the first
1/2 hr of the show, Secret Service Agent Joe Paolella will comment on the
General Petraeus affair. Joe will also tell us amazing stories when he was a
secret service agent to four US Presidents, including JFK. Joe was the Secret
Service agent responsible for guarding JFK’s limousine after the shooting. He
noticed a bullet hole through the front windshield and never told anyone about
this. About 40 years later, the first and only person he ever told was his good
friend Dr John.

In July of
1961, he was assigned to the retired president’s detail in Little Egg Harbor,
NJ. Ike was, of course, playing golf. While Brett was
thrilled to meet his idol, Eisenhower, the former Commander in Chief and
Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces turned the conversation to Brett asking
about his military career. For Eisenhower, it was a chance to talk with
another soldier.
Brett’s career
in the Secret Service had tremendous variety and poignancy. He was often
assigned to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s detail and he even protected the
Mona Lisa when the first lady arranged for the painting to be shown in the
United States in January 1963. In October of 1963, he was sent for a six week
course at Secret Service School in Washington, D.C. and was at his graduation
luncheon on November 22nd when the news of President Kennedy’s assassination
reached him and his fellow agents. He was on the detail that met the car
and accompanied the body of the President. Brett went on to serve on Johnson’s
and Nixon’s details. Brett traveled extensively throughout his career and
is now retired and living in Sarasota, Florida.

DeFreese, whose father was the minister at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Peabody, enlisted in the Navy after graduation from PHS and served in the Pacific until the end of World War II.
After his discharge, he attended Colorado State University at Ft. Collins, Colo., earning degrees in 1949 in both science and forestry. He worked for the National Park Service until 1955 when he joined the Secret Service.
DeFreese first served in Chicago, working on counterfeit cases and check forgeries. In 1958, during Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency, he was transferred to the White House detail.
He served on White House details protecting presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. DeFreese also served in the Protective Research Branch, Public Affairs, the Liaison Division, and the Office of Investigations.
DeFreese, who died in 1991 from complications of tuberculosis and leukemia, was with Kennedy in Texas, but had left Dallas the morning of the assassination.
In a letter to DeFreese's PHS classmates for a reunion book, his wife Marian wrote that Bert "had been in the field for three weeks arranging the Florida and Dallas trips. He returned home to help carry the president's casket off of Air Force One."
"JFK was wonderful to work with," she continued. "He was funny, interesting, outgoing, and modest. Bert took many trips with President Kennedy, including at least four out of the country."
DeFreese spent 23 years in the Secret Service.

Secret Service Agent Ed Morey, RIP
Wow- a Secret Service agent I spoke (very briefly) to on
6/13/05, Edward J. Morey [see my book, page 53], appears in these JUST-RELEASED
photos with President Kennedy in the oval office, dated 11/20/63, two days
before the assassination (MOREY WAS BRAND NEW TO THE WHD). Also, just found out
that Morey passed away 11/7/14; had no idea. Having ignored a letter I wrote to
him in 2004, Morey would not address the agents-on-the-limo matter: “I’m not
going to make any comment on that”, then he hung up!

As the agents who guard the president come
under renewed scrutiny, vanityfair.com revisits the entrenched culture of the
Secret Service a half century ago and reexamines the actions of John F.
Kennedy’s security detail on that fateful day in Dallas.
As agent John
Norris explained in Bill Sloan’s book J.F.K.: Breaking the Silence and
in an interview for Vincent Michael Palamara’s book Survivor’s Guilt: The
Secret Service and the Failure to Protect President Kennedy: “Except for
George Hickey and Clint Hill, [many of the others] just basically sat there
with their thumbs up their butts while the president was gunned down in front
of them.”
Although some
in his security force subtly suggested that Kennedy had brought trouble on
himself by his purported aversion to the running boards or by plunging into
crowds without any notice, others have refused to blame the victim. Agent
Gerald Behn, the head of the White House detail, who was not in Dallas that
day, told one writer, “I don’t remember Kennedy ever saying that he didn’t want
anybody on the back of his car.”
