More on Robert DeProspero (including a link to my blog!): my favorite Secret Service agent of all time; a true legend

More on Robert DeProspero: my favorite Secret Service agent of all time; a true legend

This New York Times article has a link to my blog!

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/08/obituaries/robert-deprospero-dead.html

Some excerpts from the above article:
In July 1981 Mr. DeProspero was put in charge of the presidential protective detail — Mr. Parr was promoted to assistant director of the Secret Service — and initiated new measures to improve security.
These included placing agents at hospital trauma centers closest to the locations of presidential visits, and using magnetometers to screen guests at presidential events away from the White House. He pressed for the installation of bulletproof glass on White House windows that did not already have them, and for the use of tents for presidents to walk through from their limousine to the entrance of a hotel or other building...

James A. Baker III, Mr. Reagan’s chief of staff during his first term, said Mr. DeProspero had also navigated the safety worries of the first lady, Nancy Reagan, as well as the concerns of White House staff members who did not want overzealous security to impede the president from interacting with voters, especially during his 1984 re-election campaign.

“To block off intersections for 30 or 40 minutes, you keep traffic waiting and lines stall — you lose votes!” Mr. Baker said in a telephone interview. “Bobby handled all that extraordinarily well.”

Mr. DeProspero started in 1965 as part of an influx of new agents hired to strengthen the agency after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination on Nov. 22, 1963.
Mr. DeProspero developed a reputation as a quiet, forceful and relentless leader during his two decades protecting Mr. Reagan, as well as Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter, and Vice Presidents Spiro T. Agnew, Nelson Rockefeller and Ford.
Mr. DeProspero was promoted to assistant director of training for the Secret Service in 1985 and retired the next year. For the next nine years he was the president of O’Gara Protective Services, a security firm. [clicking on the link "assistant director of training" will take you to my blog and this photo (click on image to enlarge):]

A documentary about his career, “The Man Behind the Suit,” was released in 2016 [I was Assistant Producer for this excellent documentary- my name appears twice at the end]

"Mr. DeProspero [left] was still a teacher when President Kennedy was killed. He recalled tearing up as he listened to news of the assassination on his car radio as he was driving home.
“I thought, ‘What is the guy doing who’s the head of the detail [Gerald Behn]?’ ” he recalled to The Associated Press. “He must be suffering as much as anyone else.”

Bob was a true class act. I was touched when he wrote to me out of the blue in 2011 with positive comments about my work. We e-mailed and corresponded a number of times after that (he even sent me a Christmas card once). We also spoke on the phone a couple times, as he had graciously invited my wife and I down to his daughter Robin's home for Thanksgiving in 2016 (Joe Petro would also be there). Unfortunately, we could not make it, much to my regret, but that is another story. I cherish the times I spoke to and corresponded with Bob. As I mentioned before, I was somewhat embarrassed by my criticism of the Kennedy Detail agents (before Bob's time in the agency, mind you). I sent an autographed copy of my first book to Bob with a note stating that I believed President Kennedy would have lived if he was on the detail then.

ROBERT DEPROSPERO: THE BEST

"I am impressed with your research, accuracy, and willingness to 'tell it like it is'"- Secret Service Agent Robert DeProspero, former head of President Reagan's Detail, in a surprise e-mail to myself in 2011 (this blurb is proudly mentioned in all four of my books. I ended up corresponding and speaking to Mr. DeProspero several times since)
Robert DeProspero joined the Secret Service because of the JFK assassination- he told me it was definitely a catalyst. The Air Force veteran was on the White House Detail for LBJ, Carter and Reagan, rising to both head of the detail and, later, assistant to the Director. He was head of the VP Ford Detail during the later Nixon days. He also guarded former President Eisenhower, VP Agnew and VP Rockefeller. Bob is responsible for everyone going thru magnetometers (metal detectors) in order to get near the President, as well as stationing a hospital agent in case of trauma or an incident. He also was the instigator of bulletproof windows at the White House. Several of the men and women on his detail went on to become Assistant Directors or Directors. Bob has been called perhaps the greatest protection agent the Secret Service ever had. As one of the men who was in charge of the Presidential Protection Detail (PPD, formerly known as the White House Detail), he was part of a very elite corps:
1. Joseph E. Murphy (Teddy Roosevelt [1901]-Taft eras) 2. Dick Jervis (Wilson era) 3. Col. Edmund W. Starling (Wilson-FDR) 4. Michael F. Reilly (1943-1945) 5. George C. Drescher (SAIC 4/12/45-5/3/46; nephew Earl L. Drescher became the deputy chief of the Executive Protective Service in the late 1970’s) 6. James J. Rowley (1946-Sept. 1961) 7. Gerald A. Behn (Sept. 1961-Jan. 1965) 8. Rufus W. Youngblood (1965) 9. Thomas “Lem” Johns (Fall 1965) 10. Clinton J. Hill (Approx. 1966-1968) 11. Robert H. Taylor1 (LBJ & NIXON: 1968-Feb. 1973) 12. Richard E. Keiser (Feb. 1973-1978; Nixon, Ford, Carter) 13. John R. Simpson (Carter; 1978-1979) 14. Gerald S. Parr (Carter-Reagan; 1979-early 1982) 15. Robert DeProspero (Reagan, Jan. 1982-approx. April 1985) 16. Ray Shaddick (Reagan/ Bush; 1985-1989) 17. John W. Magaw (Bush; approximately 1989-1992) 18. Rich “Skip” Miller (Bush/ Clinton; approximately 1992-1993) 19. David Carpenter (Clinton; 1994-1995) 20. Don Flynn (Clinton) 21. Lewis C. Merletti (Clinton) 22. Brian L. Stafford (Clinton) 23. Larry Cockell (Clinton) 24.Carl Truscott (Bush) 25. Eddie Marinzel (Bush) 26. Nick Trotta (Bush) 27. Don White (Bush) 28. Joe Clancy (Obama; 2/1/09-6/30/11) 29. Vic Erevia (Obama; 2011-2013) 30. Robert Buster (Obama; 2013-2015; assistants: Thomas Rizza, Kimberly Tello) 31. Michael White (Obama/ Trump; 2015-2017) 32. Anthony Ornato (Trump)

Mr. D, Robert DeProspero, has passed away. 12/31/1938-3/4/2019

A Secret Service legend---and my favorite agent---has passed away. Robert DeProspero, who served from 1965-1986 and was head of President Reagans detail for several years...simply the best. Godspeed, Bobby.

I had the supreme pleasure of quite a pleasant surprise in 2011: Mr. DeProspero wrote to me out of the blue with a very nice and inspiring message of encouragement. I confess to being slightly embarrassed for being such a critic of the agency's performance on 11/22/63 (before his time, mind you), but he didn't seem to mind.

I had the honor of speaking to him a couple times in 2016 (he generously invited my wife and I to his house for Thanksgiving. To my supreme regret, we could not make it...I really regret not making it now). We also corresponded and I even had the pleasure of speaking to his daughter, also an esteemed member of the Secret Service.

I am very happy I was able to be an Associate Producer of the documentary about his life, THE MAN BEHIND THE SUIT.

I am saddened by his passing but heartened by the example of the life he led. He truly left his mark on the world.

"In the months after the attack [3/30/81-Reagan assassination attempt], DeProspero took over Reagan's security detail. He imposed a raft of new security requirements, some of which remain standard Secret Service protocol.
He is credited with the agency's decision to begin using magnetometers to screen guests to all presidential visits away from White House. Presidential advisors had long resisted such electronic frisking, fearing it might alienate invited donors and constituents.
DeProspero also enacted the policy, still in force today, of stationing an agent at the closest trauma hospital whenever the president travels.
DeProspero also successfully pushed for the installation of bulletproof glass on many White House windows, over the objections of the mansion's historical preservationists.
Eight members of Mr. DeProspero’s detail became assistant or deputy directors of the Secret Service, and two, Lewis Merletti and Brian Stafford, rose to become director."

US Secret Service foiled attack on President Ronald Reagan during visit to Ireland

US Secret Service foiled attack on President Ronald Reagan during visit to Ireland Man holding a concealed broken glass attempted to shake hands with the president By KERRY O’SHEA, IrishCentral Staff Writer Published Friday, June 1, 2012, 7:17 AM President Reagan during his visit to Ireland in 1984 Photo by Swimtwobirds A new documentary about the late President Ronald Reagan’s visit to Ireland recounts how the Secret Service prevented an attack on the President during his visit in 1984. A man holding a concealed broken piece of glass tried to shake hands with the president after breaching a secure area where the president was standing in his ancestral town of Ballyporeen in Tipperary, ready to address an audience. MC for the event Derek Davis recounts in a new documentary about the visit that said Mr Reagan was still “somewhat fragile" when he arrived in Ballyporeen with his wife, Nancy after an 1981 assassination attempt left him injured. "They (secret service) were very nervous at the time. Charm was not one of their gifts and their relationship with people on the ground was very poor," he recalled. "Anecdotally, we were told there was a bit of a kerfuffle up the main street. Some nutter had attempted to shake hands with Reagan whilst holding a piece of broken glass. "At one point, Reagan was completely surrounded by secret servicemen all in identical raincoats -- identical to his. They were all of a certain height, all of a certain build and all dressed identically and they milled around him," Mr Davis revealed. "Interestingly Nancy was left on the outside of that ring." The member of the crowd pushed beyond security barriers and attempted to force his way into an area that was occupied by the president and his party. Reagan was the target of many protestors especially for his handling of Central American issues such as El Salvador and Nicaragua where he funded right-wing parties and militias. The attempted attack was, of course, thwarted by the Secret Service and has been kept under wraps since the incident. It has only since come to light in the new documentary which marks 28 years since the President’s visit to Tipperary. More famously, three years prior to his visit to Tipperary, President Reagan was the target of another assassination attempt. On March 30 1981, just 69 days into his presidency, Reagan and members of his team were shot at by John Hinckley, Jr outside of the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. Though President Reagan did sustain a punctured lung and heavy internal bleeding as a result of the shooting, he recovered fully. Several members of his entourage, many of whom were Irish American, also sustained injuries. White House Press Secretary at the time, James Brady, was the first to be shot, receiving a bullet in his head, which ultimately left him paralyzed. Thomas Delahunty, a police officer for the District of Columbia, was the second to be shot and was hit in the back of his neck as he turned to protect President Reagan. The bullet in Delahunty’s neck had to be removed on the scene for fear that it would explode within his body Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy was the fourth to be shot as he spread his body over the President to protect him. John Hinckley, Jr was found not guilty of the assassination attempt by way of insanity and has since been confined to a mental institution. 'A Rainy Day in June' was broadcast on Tipp FM. Reagan attack bid kept secret AN attempted attack on US President Ronald Reagan during his Irish visit was successfully foiled by the Secret Service -- and kept secret for three decades. The revelation came in a new documentary to mark the 28th anniversary of the visit to his ancestral home in Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary. During the trip in 1984, a member of the crowd pushed beyond security barriers and attempted to force his way into an area to be occupied by the president and his party.

First lady delivers thank-you to Secret Service

First lady delivers thank-you to Secret Service

By NANCY BENAC, Associated Press – 1 day ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — This is what passes for dinner table conversation in the Obama White House:

Sasha wants Scott. So does Malia. The first lady wants Beth. So does Barack.

Turns out everyone's dickering over who gets which Secret Service agent.

Michelle Obama revealed the tongue-in-cheek family feud as she paid a visit to Secret Service headquarters on Wednesday to thank workers at the agency that, among its many duties, protects the first family.

It was another of her periodic visits to government offices around town. But this visit was more personal than most.

"You all have really made us feel at home and safe, and there is no amount of thanks that I could convey that would give you a sense of how important you all are to us," Mrs. Obama told hundreds of Secret Service employees. She spoke to the group for about five minutes after touring classified areas of the building, including the protective intelligence division and the joint operations center.

The first lady paid tribute not just to the agents who protect the Obamas, but to all the workers behind the scenes, "whether it's filing or looking at terrorists."

"The work you do here is pretty scary," she said. "All I can say, after my little tour, is ignorance is bliss. I just don't want to know. You all can handle that. Just tell me where to run."

The first lady said the Obamas have a special affinity for the agents assigned to protect them.

"People always ask what it is like to have Secret Service around," Mrs. Obama said. "It's like having family around. ... We have a fight among our family over who's getting which people.

"Sasha will come in, it's like, 'You took Scott!'" Mrs. Obama said. "Malia's like, 'You took Scott? That's not fair!' And then I'll say the same thing to Barack. It's like, 'Why did you get Beth?' It's dinner table conversation."

Mrs. Obama said a good relationship with the agents is important "when you're trying to live a normal life and raise a couple of girls in the White House."

The president, in an interview with ABC News this week, said it's a challenge to give his daughters plenty of "space to make mistakes, be teenagers" while also ensuring they're protected.

"They're still going to the mall. And they're still going to movies. But they've got this guy with a gun following them around," Obama said. "Our Secret Service detail is terrific about it. But it's a balance that has to be struck."

[edit] BiographyAbraham Bolden grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois.[1] After receiving a degree in music from Lincoln University of Missouri,[2] he began his professional career as an Illinois state trooper. He joined the Secret Service in 1961 and later that year he became the first African American member of the Secret Service's Presidential Protective Division after being appointed by President John F. Kennedy.[3] According to Bolden, Kennedy personally invited him to join the detail when the two met at an event in Chicago in April.[4] He worked in the dual capacities of guarding the President and investigating counterfeiting.[5]

In the wake of the 1963 John F. Kennedy assassination, Bolden contacted the Warren Commission, hoping to testify about an alleged assassination plot in Chicago two weeks before Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. He traveled to Washington but before he could testify, Bolden was returned to Chicago. There he was arrested on May 20, 1964 on federal charges that he had solicited a bribe from a counterfeiting ring that he had helped break.[6] He was accused of seeking $50,000 in exchange for a secret file on the investigation.[7] He maintained his innocence, asserting that he had been framed because he planned to expose dereliction among the agents assigned to guard Kennedy in front of the Commission. The Secret Service denied Bolden's claims. Bolden's first jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction, at which time presiding judge Joseph Sam Perry issued an Allen charge in which he expressed his belief that Bolden was guilty but that the jury was free to disregard his opinion. The jury remained deadlocked and Perry declared a mistrial on July 11, 1964. In his retrial Bolden was convicted and Judge Perry sentenced him to six years in prison.[3] Bolden appealed his conviction to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, based in part on Perry's Allen charge in the first trial. Bolden claimed that the charge was evidence that Perry was not impartial and that his failure to recuse himself denied Bolden a fair trial. The Appeals Court disagreed and upheld Bolden's conviction in a decision issued December 29, 1965.[8]

Following his release from prison, Bolden worked as a quality control supervisor in the automotive industry until his retirement in 2001.[9]

In 2008, Bolden published his memoir, The Echo From Dealey Plaza: The True Story of the First African American on the White House Secret Service Detail and His Quest for Justice After the Assassination of JFK.

[edit] Portrayals in fictionAbraham Bolden appears in the 2011 television miniseries The Kennedys. He is depicted joining the President's protective detail and later President Kennedy turns to him as a sounding board during the crisis surrounding the 1962 desegregation of the University of Mississippi. Bolden is portrayed by Rothaford Gray.

Blaine is getting desperate now---almost humorous if it wasn't pathetic (more about the WC reports---CE1025---that Blaine says came out in 1992 and we are avoiding...or is that just ME he means?)

Hey, ole Jer: NO ONE IS IGNORING THOSE REPORTS YOU MISTAKENLY THOUGHT ONLY CAME OUT IN 1992 in your book. I, along with hundreds, if not thousands, of other authors and researchers have dealt with them, at length, since they first appeared in The Warren Report and the 26 accompanying volumes of hearings and exhibits...in September 1964 (the massive best-sellers The Warren Report, The Day Kennedy Was Shot, and The Death of a President", to name just a few...oh, yes: and my own book "Survivor's Guilt: The Secret Service & The Failure To Protect The President").

Here's what Jerry says in his latest blog (no one is fooled: the timing coincides with the release of yet more videos containing the audio that debunks the claims he is attempting to make [see below***]):

"For those who have not read the Warren Report, or chose to simply ignore it [hahaha---a not-so-subtle and erroneous "dig" at myself, no doubt], I have posted below statements submitted by Special Agent in Charge Jerry Behn, ASAIC Floyd Boring, ATSAIC Emory Roberts, SA Jack Ready and SAIC Clinton J. Hill regarding presidential requests... I paraphrased the statements in the book, but here are the originals submitted to the Warren Commission: [CE 1025]"

Always remember: these reports are AFTER-THE-FACT CYA crapola, written by men with blood on their hands. Blaine and his colleagues failed to prevent the murder of JFK and, by his own admission, Blaine damn near killed yet another President, Lyndon Johnson. This admission reminds one of the tales O.J. Simpson wrote in his tell-all confessional "If I Did It." I always said that Blaine should have titled his book "We Let Them Do It...Now it's Time To Profit From Our Errors Which We Now Blame On JFK."

The TRUE heroes of the Secret Service are the many men and women who came AFTER 11/22/63 (as well as quite a few beforehand): not only the modern Secret Service, but especially the heroes of 3/30/81---SAIC Jerry Parr...ATSAIC Ray Shaddick...SA Tim McCarthy...

ASAIC Robert DeProspero, Parr's deputy who eventually went on to replace him as Reagan's #1 agent, is the greatest protection agent the Service has ever had---here is what he had to say about my work: "Vince,I have been watching your work for many months. Am impressed with your research, accuracy and willingness to "tell it like it is". [e-mail to Vince Palamara 4/10/11] Now THERE is a man (my personal hero)the Secret Service can be very proud of. In my opinion, he towers above any and all JFK-era agents, but I digress.

Vince,

I have been watching your work for many months. Am impressed with your research, accuracy and willingness to "tell it like it is".

In retrospect, should have talked to you instead of Del.
