1865- President Lincoln signs the bill by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCullough before heading to Ford's Theater where he is assassinated (the Secret Service actually did exist during the Civil War on both sides as a spy organization. The bill created them in a formal sense to combat counterfeiting)
1881- President James Garfield is assassinated
1897- The Secret Service begins informal protection of presidents when, on an informal/ courtesy basis, a few agents watch over President Grover Cleveland due to kidnapping (of baby daughter Ruth) threats
1901- Although Secret Service personnel were present, President William McKinley is assassinated.

1932- President-elect FDR survives an assassination attempt
1950- President Truman survives an assassination attempt. Congress makes the protection of the president by the Secret Service legal via law
1963- JFK is assassinated
1975- President Ford survives two assassination attempts in the month of September by two different women
1981- President Reagan survives an assassination attempt
2015- 150th anniversary
